What is Self-Esteem?
Self-esteem is your overall evaluation of your own worth. It is your confidence and satisfaction in yourself. It encompasses the below, which are based on beliefs we hold about ourselves:
- How you judge or criticize yourself.
- Your attitude towards yourself (good vs. bad).
The Importance of Self-Esteem
With little self-regard, it is easy for people to fall short of their potential, become depressed, and even tolerate and stay in destructive situations and relationships. On the other hand, too much self-esteem can lead people to entitlement, inability to learn from mistakes, and even narcissism. However, there is a balance that may be struck between self-knowledge and respect for oneself in which one’s greatest potential may be unlocked.
How Self-Esteem Affects You
If you are one of the fortunate ones to have a good self-esteem, then normal ups and downs may temporarily affect how you feel about yourself, but only for a limited time. A healthy self-esteem is when we can assess ourselves accurately and still accept who we are. To do this, we must be able and willing to acknowledge our strengths and weaknesses while at the same time respecting ourselves and the worth we contribute to the world.
On the other hand, if you suffer from poor self-esteem, those ups and downs may drastically impact the way you see yourself. A poor self-esteem is when we often rely ONLY on how we are doing in the present moment to determine how we feel about ourselves. With poor self-esteem, positive reinforcement is needed from external experiences, such as compliments from others, to counteract the negative feelings and thoughts. Even good feelings from those compliments are usually temporary.
