What is Body Image?

It is how you see yourself when you look in the mirror or when you picture yourself in your mind. It encompasses:

  • What you believe about your own appearance (including your memories, assumptions, and generalizations).
  • How you feel about your body, including your height, shape, and weight.
  • Additionally, how you sense and control your body as you move.  For example, how you feel in your body, not just about your body.

The Importance of Body Image

People with a high self-image often feel comfortable and confident in their body and refuse to spend an unreasonable amount of time worrying about food, weight, and calories.  However, when we don’t feel good about how we look, then our confidence and ability to think beyond ourselves significantly decreases.  For example, we may feel ashamed, self-conscious, or even anxious about our body.  Often times people with low body image feel uncomfortable in their own skin and just awkward in their body.  Moreover, some people view their body size or shape as a sign of personal failure.

Body Image and Eating Disorders

People with negative body image also have a greater likelihood of developing an eating disorder and are more likely to suffer from feelings of depression, isolation, low self-esteem, and obsessions with weight loss.

We all may have our days when we feel awkward or uncomfortable in our bodies, but the key to developing positive body image is to recognize and respect our natural shape and learn to overpower those negative thoughts and feelings with positive, affirming, and accepting ones.

What are the benefits of improving body image with hypnosis?

Hypnosis has been used to improve our ability to accept ourselves and what we can control, make the necessary changes to improve what we can control, and feel good about ourselves.  Additionally, hypnosis has been successfully used for weight management, acne, nail biting, and many other issues related to the way we see our bodies.

Accept yourself. Accept your body.
